Where We Started

Mattress RecyclingTM was started by owner and CEO Fabio Scaldaferri in Vancouver in 2008 along with three other young eco-entrepreneurs. Ten years later, the company established a new multi-million-dollar facility in Hope, BC, and maintains its position as the largest recycling operation of its kind in Western Canada.

We service cities and clients across Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Northern BC, the Interior, and Alberta, and put our relationships with our customers first. Mattress RecyclingTM is also a proudly certified living wage employer and a pioneer in the automated recovery of used mattresses.

How We Began

Scaldaferri and his original co-founders were instrumental in the creation of the regional legislation surrounding the system for managing end-of-life mattresses in BC.

The group went to Metro Vancouver council meetings and presented the case for a ban on mattresses, box springs, and futons from landfills and incineration. Landfills generally dislike mattresses because they are high-volume,

low-weight items that take up space while being packed full of recyclable materials. A ban was fast-tracked to start in January 2011 — the very first of its kind in the world for such a large region.

Where We Are Now

Since its inception, Mattress RecyclingTM has processed more than one million mattresses and 50 million pounds of recyclable material.

And we are always looking to improve our reach. Since 2018, we have expanded to also support major recycling programs such as Recycle BC, Call2Recycle, Product Care, MARR, and Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. We are also looking into servicing new and emerging environmental industries.

At our 21,000-square-foot facility in Hope, Mattress RecyclingTM has pioneered a world-first automated system for the processing of recycled mattresses, furniture, and textiles. Scaldaferri designed the customized system and built the facility specifically for the purpose of mattress recycling, with respect to safety and efficient operations, and maximizing the percentage of each unit that is repurposed. This means we are able to accept 100% of all mattresses diverted to our facility: even wet, soiled, or contaminated loads.

Our customers come first and we strive to build decades-long relationships with our clients and community.

We are trucking friendly. The facility is set on three acres of industrial land, with 22 loading bays, one graded drive-in entrance, and extended flexible gate access hours. It is also significant that Mattress RecyclingTM is located at a junction of five major highways, allowing us to service municipalities and private clients throughout Western Canada.

Who We Are

Our Values

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We value the hierarchy of recycling, and will always try to find the best possible “R” for every item that passes through our facility on its recycling journey.
Transparency

Integrity

Zero-waste is at the heart of every decision we make. We carefully track how much of each material we recycle and constantly look for ways to improve our processes.

MRC About Us Our Values Transparency

We are an IWAY-certified facility, which maintains strict, audited ethical, environmental, and safety standards.

Eco-friendliness

We’re green from head to toe

Would you believe old wetsuits, shoes, and area rugs end up at our facility to be recycled?

MRC About Us Our ValuesEco-Friendliness

Powered by hydroelectricity, we run a 95% emissions-free facility and maintain an extensive fleet of electric machines and vehicles. Beyond just mattresses, we offer recycling solutions to a broad range of North American businesses, helping make their green footprint that much deeper. Think prominent clothing manufacturers, large furniture retailers, and hotels, care homes, and hospitals looking to switch out their mattresses and furniture.

We are constantly innovating and finding new ways to recycle, including an exciting project repurposing old EVA shoes.

As well as a pilot project with the City of Vancouver to recycle car seats at select zero-waste drop-off events.

We also don’t take ourselves too seriously. Caring about the environment can be fun! We recently added an apiary to our property and created a thriving sanctuary for honeybees. Who knows, chickens may be moving in next!

How We Give Back

Community Impact

No business operates in a bubble. Connecting with our community is at the forefront of what we do, meaning we strive to partner with a variety of community organizations and charities in areas outside the traditional scope of recycling.

Community First

We believe that every family deserves security. We pay all our employees a living wage, with benefits.

In 2018, we partnered with RecycleBC, MARR, Call2Recycle, and more to bring new, multi-stream recycling programs to Hope and the surrounding area.

We are also very thankful to be based out in the Fraser Valley, and seek out local employment placement programs during hiring calls. Our doors are always open to requests to sponsor local events, and we are among the team of businesses who have mobilized to assist the 2021 Lytton fire tragedy on an ongoing basis.

In 2021, we partnered with Backpack Buddies to help bring a new food program to area schools, and we will continue to use our network to help people who need it most.
